Be Kind Rewind is not a show. On the one hand, because it is an ongoing project, a column that we began to develop in 2020 with the two Not an Island exhibitions, which gave rise to the first edition of the same name three years ago. On the other hand, it is not an exhibition in the sense that it does not want to be one. The ideas behind these exhibitions all try to counteract what should be done in an exhibition, they all try to be faux pas, no-nos.

There is no idea of commitment to a project. In fact, we allow ourselves to change it freely during the exhibition, and it is unlikely that a visit to the exhibition in two weeks‘ time will see a completely different set from this one. This does not mean that this exhibition is less important in the gallery‘s programme, quite the contrary. If there are no concerns about the kind of things that normally dictate the gallery‘s regular programme, there are others that are of enormous commitment.

We see Be Kind Rewind as an opportunity to do what we wanted to do better. I wanted the series that Cortez produced for Düs- seldorf to have the prominence that it lent to the work of Keke and Pascoinho, and I didn‘t manage to achieve the same for his. I wanted the works that Arteiro developed for ARCO to have the space that they didn‘t have at the stand. I wanted Neiva‘s piece to be seen in natural light. And so on.

But above all, with Be Kind Rewind, we are interested in counteracting the speed at which things happen, which leaves no time to contemplate mistakes, oversights, or even to congratulate ourselves on things we are particularly proud of. And, above all, that don‘t give us time to assess whether what we are doing continues to meet what we wanted to guarantee for the project, which, because it is so personal and so familiar, is inseparable from our personal lives.

We are fast approaching the gallery‘s tenth anniversary. These gallery years had to be counted as cat years; ten years seems very little. We are fortunate to have maintained the main premises of the project. The most important one, to which we are strongly committed, and to which we are so committed that we have associated, albeit covertly, the name of the gallery with our daughter, is that nothing we do here will ever have any meaning if we do not protect what matters most to us. Ultimately, only happiness.
