Biography

Paulo Catrica (Portugal, 1965) studied photography at ArCo – Art and Visual Communication Center, Lisbon (1985). Graduated in History from Universidade Lusíada, Lisbon (1992), Master in Image and Communication from Goldsmith’s College, London (1997) and PhD in Photography Studies from the University of Westminster, London (2011). He was a professor at Lusófona University (Lisbon, 2010-2014), at ESMAE - College of Music and Performing Arts at Polytechnic Institute of Porto (Porto, 2010-2014), at ESAD - College of Art and Design (Caldas da Rainha, 2010-2011), at Atelier de Lisboa (Lisbon, 2010-2016), Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (Lisbon, 2016-2020) and currently teaches at School of Arts of Catholic University, (Porto, since 2011). Since 2014, he is a researcher at Contemporary History Institute of New University of Lisbon.

Nominated for the BES Photo Award in 2005 of the Cultural de Belém Cultural Centre (Lisbon, PT).

Catrica has exhibited and published his work regularly since 1997. Recent shows include Presença Gallery (Oporto, 2016), Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (Guimarães, 2015), Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon, 2015), C.A.A.A. Fundacíon Foto Colectania (Barcelona, 2010) and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, 2010).

His work is represented in several private and institutional art collections, including: Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, PT), EDP Foundation (Lisbon, PT), PLMJ (Lisbon, PT), Novo Banco (Lisbon, PT), Museum of London, Lisbon Photographic Archive and Portuguese Photography Center (Porto, PT). He lives and works in Lisbon, PT.
